How to find cheap classroom materials

April 8, 2023

Have you ever wondered how to find cheap ways to acquire your classroom materials. Teachers do not make a ton of money…right? However, we need to sometimes furnish or get items that are out of our budget. See below my ways on how I have not spent my paycheck on my classroom.

Dramatic play was the most over whelming area for me when I began my Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) journey. I had my curriculum to semi-guide me, but it was really challenging to find materials for each “unit”. Especially when all I had was a play kitchen. Lots of research and blog reading was really helpful I have gathered all that I have learned to help you.

Buy Nothing Groups

Many regions/cities/towns have a buy nothing group. This has been a game changer for me to accumulate items for making a fun unit. Check out this website to see if there is one in your area! I like these groups because most items are within 10-15 minutes for your house.

On these groups I have posted I am a special education teacher and I have asked to borrow or ask for items. Many people are so giving, especially, to teachers and willing to help.

Donors Choose

This website can take a little time to prepare, but if you send a monthly newsletter, send it out to your PTA, facebook, community groups, or even businesses. You would be surprised how fast you can get an entire project funded for! My co-teacher and I have had 2 projects funded this year.

Asking for Donations

Many large companies or even local companies are willing to give grants or sponsor something for your classroom. You just have to ask. Emails are great, but they are easy to say no to. However, going to your local owner stores or even places like Costco, Walmart, Target. They have money to give out each year for donations for tax purposes! You can even try thrift stores because they can only hold items for so long and many are willing to donate to a school after their time limit on the floor is up.

Donations do not have to be large pieces of furniture, it could be for items for art or even sensory bins! I have had friends ask for glue sticks, markers, and other items their student’s can not afford! You never know what people will say until you ask!!

Amazon Teacher Wishlists

Amazon Teacher Wishlists have become a “thing” for teachers to do when back to school is approaching. This is not required by any means. However, some teachers keep a link in their email signature for parents of their students to purchase items. This is not necessary, but just another way for more eyes to get on your list. Larger companies and corporations will “clear” your lists occasionally. Many “influencers” will also publicize they are willing to purchase items off teachers wishlists. Keep your eyes peeled and use the #clearthelist to search Instagram or FB or even Tiktok to find people.

If you do not have a list and want to make one. Grab the directions I have created here. Also, check out my Amazon storefront to get some ideas of what you may want to add to your list!!
