What is Community-Based Instruction?

June 12, 2023

Empowering special education students through real-world learning…how is this possible?! Community Based Instruction (CBI) is your answer. This teaching method takes learning beyond the classroom walls and immerses students in real-life experiences within their communities. By engaging students in practical, hands-on activities, CBI helps bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application.

What can CBI look like?

Community-Based Instruction refers to an instructional approach that integrates real-life experiences into the curriculum of students with special needs. It involves taking students out of the classroom setting and providing them with opportunities to learn and practice skills in community settings such as stores, libraries, parks, and public transportation. The goal is to help students develop functional skills that are essential for independent living, employment, and community participation.

Some schools might not have the opportunity to leave the building, if that is the case for you. Check out this blog to see some skills you can work on inside the building.

What are the benefits of CBI?

Real World Experience- This is a way to see what is engaging to the students and what are their areas of strength.

Skill Generalization- A way to practice skills in the natural environment and increase their independence and self confidence.

Community Integration- A way to provide an inclusive opportunity for students and their community.

Social/Communication Skills- A great way to practice initiating conversations, asking for help purchasing items, and learning how to cooperate with others.

Vocational Preparation- A way for students to build a foundation for future employment by gaining job skills in a natural environment.

Grab this list HERE for a downloadable list that has some ideas to get you started! Every school district has their own regulations so make sure you learn those before planning your first trip! Have fun, take pictures (if parents give permission) because it is great for students resumes! Remember, this is a critical skill you are helping students learn to better prepare them for the future!
