February 15, 2022

Looking for creative ways to keep your students engaged at school? Try these 5 in school jobs for students with special needs. These jobs within the school building can promote independence, self-worth, and job skill preparation! Also, it can incorporate SO many different life and job skills; like following directions, increased work stamina, organization, life skills, following multi-step directions and more. Read below to see what in school jobs I have some of my students complete inside our school building.

#1 – Lost and Found

Students organize the lost and found by hanging the jackets, sweatshirts, shirts and organizing the smaller items like scarves, glasses, masks, water bottles and more into labeled bins. This job allows students to work on hanging clothes, organizing, labeling, sorting and more.

#2 – Delivering Items

Check with your office staff to see if students an deliver items to the lunch room, classrooms or around the school. My office staff loves when we come by to see if there are items that can be delivered. Their jobs are busy and to ease their work load is a win win for everyone. This job is great for students to practice knocking on the door, writing, using names and clear communication to deliver items around the school.

#3 – Library Jobs

Our library staff is phenomenal and has come up with. jobs my students can help with. I have one students who takes a basket around to each grade level and gathers the return books twice a day. The student then brings the books into the library and places them on a table and organizes them by size for the librarian. We use visuals to allow independence and my students thrives on this work!

Another job idea is scanning books back into the system or shelving books if your school librarian allows items like this. Some schools have a strict policy, but it is worth asking!

#4 – Sharpening Pencils

Students sharpen pencils for teachers in the building. I recommend setting up a certain day and time students can go to the classroom. My students take the “dull” basket and sharpen the pencils and return them for teachers. An easy way to set this up is to send a staff wide email out or select certain staff members if you work in a large building.

#5 – Food Bag Delivery

Our last job we do throughout the school is delivering weekend food bags to classrooms. The information of the students obtaining the food is kept private. Students are given a list with the teachers name and a number next to it. Students place the bags in a designated spot. Teachers know which students receive the food bags.

Another job that coordinates with this is our school has a nightly meal service. Students who qualify can get a meal to take him each night. Our cafeteria has a system with black crates used for the meals. I have a student who each morning goes and gathers the baskets each morning so the cafeteria staff can fill and deliver the baskets each afternoon.
