Mother’s Day crafts are some of my favorite things to create! They are of those special times in the classroom where you want activities to feel meaningful, but let’s be honest… you also need them to be quick, simple, and low prep.
If you are like me you are planning a few weeks or even just a week ahead of time and realize May is NEXT week! *Cue the panic* I have 5 easy prep Mother’s Day crafts for you below! They require minimal materials, are student-friendly, and create keepsakes families will truly cherish.
Here are 5 simple Mother’s Day ideas your students will LOVE making!
1. Watercolor Hearts Craft
This classic craft is simple, beautiful, and perfect for all skill levels.
Why teachers love it:
- Minimal prep (just paper + paint!)
- Great for practicing fine motor skills
- Turns into a beautiful card or display piece
How to do it:
Have students create a heart with painters tape on cardstock paper. Then, paint the heart shape using watercolor paints (or even markers + water). Let colors blend naturally for that soft, artistic look. You don’t even have to use water colors, Kwik Stix, Markers, Crayons, or Paint will work!! This Mother’s day craft is good for all ages and abilities!!
Materials:
- Painters Tape
- Cardstock
- Watercolors, Markers, Kwik Stix, Crayons, etc
- Paint Brushes

2. Painter’s Tape MOM Canvas
This is the kind of gift families hold onto forever. The prep takes a little more time, but if you have a classroom volunteer, high school students looking for volunteer hours, an amazing para who will prep or students who have great fine motor this is perfect!!
Why it works:
- Personal and meaningful
- Easy to differentiate
- Looks impressive with very little effort
How to do it:
Write, use Painter’s tape or stencil the word “MOM” on a small canvas. Students can decorate with paint, fingerprints, or handprints to personalize it.
Materials Needed:
- Canvases
- Painters Tape or Stencil
- Coloring Utensils

3. Water Bag Painted Flowers (Mess-Free Art!)
If you’re looking for a mess-free Mother’s Day craft, this one is a game changer.
Perfect for:
- Preschool, kindergarten, and special education classrooms
- Sensory-friendly activities
- Keeping paint off desks (and everything else 😅)
How to do it:
Place paper on a tray. Add a small amount of water to the baggie and rubber band it to look like an icing pipette. (I suggest having a different bag for each color) Students press the bag into the paint and then lightly tap it all over the top of their paper to create flower designs….no cleanup required! Check out this link to see a quick video how to do it! I had premade vases ready to go to glue once their paint dried. Once its dried and the vase is glued on I had students, my para or myself draw the stems!
Materials:
- Plastic Bag with water & rubber band
- Paint
- Tray or paper plate for paint
- Paper for artwork

4. Cupcake Liner Flowers Craft
Budget-friendly and adorable…this craft is always a hit.
Why teachers love it:
- Uses inexpensive materials
- Encourages creativity
- Great for bulletin boards or take-home bouquets
How to do it:
Flatten and layer cupcake liners to create flowers, then attach them to paper stems or straws for a cute bouquet effect. Many times I have posted on my free FB site and have gotten so many cute design cupcake liners people has left over from other projects!
Materials:
- Cupcake Liners
- Paper
- Markers for stems…or straws!
- Glue
- Buttons or other nick nacks for flowers (optional)

5. “Things I Love About Mom” Magnet
This one is guaranteed to melt hearts ❤️
Why it’s special:
- Combines writing + art
- Encourages student voice
- Makes a meaningful keepsake
How to do it:
Have students write or dictate things they love about their mom (or special person). Attach the writing to a decorated backing and add a magnet for an easy fridge display. If your students use technology you can make a template in Canva or another program for easier completion! I did this one during virtual learning and it was a hit!
Materials:
- Paper
- Template or Example
- Glue
- Magnets
