Looking for ways to make connections with your students or co-workers? When we think about what makes a classroom thrive, we often focus on lesson plans, teaching strategies, and curriculum. But sometimes, it’s the little things; the thoughtful, personal touches that leave the biggest impact on students. Incorporating simple tools like positive notes, break cards, and miss-you cards (aka happy mail) can completely transform the classroom atmosphere. These strategies don’t just encourage students, they foster connection, build trust, and create joy. By weaving in these simple practices, you’re building brighter, stronger connections that make your classroom a place where every student feels supported and valued.
1. Positive Notes
A handwritten note of encouragement can do more than boost a student’s confidence in the moment; it can leave a lasting impression. Positive notes remind students that their efforts are seen and valued. Positive notes can be celebrating an academic win, a kind gesture, or improvement in behavior. These notes reinforce a growth mindset and build self-esteem and give their family members a chance to praise their child. These notes were EASY to print. I went on Canva used the postcard template and printed simple positive phrases. Then, I grabbed my favorite paper Astrobrights and printed a whole stack to keep handy. Parents LOVE getting notes about their child. Plus, I feel a hand written note really adds a personal touch! These are easy ways to build brighter and stronger connections in the classroom.

2. Break Cards
Break cards have been my go to in building stronger connections with students. Sometimes students need a pause to regulate their emotions or recharge. Break cards give students a voice and the permission to advocate for their needs in a respectful way. By incorporating break cards, you’re teaching self-regulation, responsibility, and the importance of mental well-being. This can keep your classroom environment calm, and supportive.

3. Happy Mail
Sometimes joy comes in the form of unexpected surprises! Sending happy mail to former students or bringing your teacher bestie a latte! Using fun beverage tags adds a playful, uplifting element to your classroom culture and school climate. These small tokens remind students, co-workers, and families that school is a place of care! These “little” things can really be bright moment in someones day. It also helps build stronger home-school connections!

As important it is to build that connection with your students, do not forget about your paraprofessionals special educators! I use my weekly to-do template to plan out things my paraprofessional can help me with each week. I leave it on our desk and add things each day or sometimes all in the beginning of the week. Each week is a different color, because why not? I love Astrobrights paper for these weekly to-do lists and it keeps it from getting lost on our desk…(IYKYK).

Why These Tools Work
Each of these strategies shares a common thread: they create a culture of connection. They show students that learning isn’t just about academics; it’s also about relationships, support, and belonging. When students feel cared for, they are more likely to stay engaged, motivated, and confident in themselves. When your co-workers feel supported and heard the co-teaching only becomes better which in turn benefits the students! (Aka, the reason we are here!!)
