Adapted books are a great teaching tool when introducing new concepts in a the classroom. They are one of my favorite ways to reinforce or work on topics in my classroom. Adapted books are typically a bound book with simplified text that work on a variety of concepts to educate students of all ages and abilities. These are great to use because they are interactive and keep students engaged in learning.
What do you need?
To create your own adapted. book or to assemble your own you will need the actual book/educational materials to start.
- Velcro dots
- Educational Materials
- Lamination Sheets
- Laminator
- Binder/Metal Rings
- Binding Coils
When do I use adapted books?
I use adapted books multiple ways in my classroom. Teaching 3 different grade levels I found that adapted books were useful for multiple scenarios in each classroom setting.
- Small Groups
- IEP Goals
- 1:1 settings to
- Fine Motor goals
- Following Directions
- Completing Tasks
- Turn Taking
- and more
Adapted books have been so beneficial for my classroom. Two tips I want to share with about using them.
Tip #1 – When doing a counting adapted book do not put the pages in numerical order. Students will then not learn to count with 1:1 correspondence, they will just recite or move the number. See my reel here for an example!
Tip #2 – When making adapted. books or using adapted that have 1 answer per page put more than 1 velcro dot or give more than 1 answer choice to make sure the student is understanding the concept being taught!
Using my prepositional adapted books I put 2-3 dots per page to make sure the student understands the concept being taught. These are also great for turn taking and having students “wait”. Check out my blog on turn taking ideas if you are looking for me here.
Looking to get some adapted books for your classroom?! My prepositional bundle is a digital and paper based product that would be perfect to try!
